PMS Discovery
As far back as the 1st and 2nd century, Greek physician Soranus noted in a guide for midwives that women became tense before their periods. However, few in medicine had any idea what was behind this tension until 1931. That year, New York gynecologist Robert Tilden Frank delivered a paper in which he noted his interest in "a large group of women who are handicapped by premenstrual disturbances." Frank was the first modern physician to speculate that these "disturbances" were linked to the ovarian cycles.
The more commonly used term "premenstrual syndrome" was coined by British physician Dr. Katharina Dalton in 1953.
